London Contemporary Orchestra collaboration with Actress.
This collaboration between the London Contemporary Orchestra and the electronic artist Actress goes back to 2016 when I first started speaking with Artistic Directors Hugh Brunt and Rob Ames about the idea of recreating Actress’ work with acoustic instruments. Hugh wrote the arrangements and chose on an instrumentation of Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Harp, Prepared Piano and Percussion (Vibes, Marimba, Sudo-Drum Kit, Toys, Plastic Bag)
The first performance was given at the Barbican on February 10th 2016 with more performances in Moscow (July 2016), BBC Proms (September 2017) and the Barbican (May 2018). See this clip for some more information on the project.
Broken Wings West end and Middle East Tour
It was an experience and a pleasure to sound design the world premier of Broken Wings at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. The production schedule was challenging to say the least. The rig was based around an LCR d&b Y series point source PA with, with DPA 4061’s on the 14-strong cast. The band mic package was a mixture of DPA 4061’s 4099’s and 4011’s with a few other mic’s from Audix and AKG.
The production received a warm welcome in London and has since played in Beirut and Doha with a short run at the Dubai Opera House scheduled for 2020.
448 Psychosis for the Royal Opera House
This opera by composer Philip Venables was his doctoral composition whilst being composer in residence at the Royal Opera House. The text is based on Sarah Kane’s novel of the same title and the opera was first performed at the Hammersmith Lyric in May 2016 and enjoyed a successful revival in April 2018. For the first run, I mixed the show taking up the position of a typical Sound 1. For the revival I took the position of associate sound designer and was responsible for putting the opera back into the Lyric. Since then the opera has also played in New York and Strasbourg, both with myself as Associate Sound Designer.
The Phantom Thread Live Film Score
After the LCO recorded the soundtrack for this film, Universal looked into doing not only a selection of screenings with live orchestra but holding the European Premiere in the Festival Hall with the soundtrack provided live by the LCO. Working closely with director Paul Thomas Anderson and composer Jonny Greenwood, we found a language for these live screenings that complemented the dialogue but also brought the excitement of a live orchestra. Projection provided curtesy of Motion Picture Solutions.
Anna Meredith band and Live Varmints project
I have been lucky enough to work with Anna Meredith through a variety of Projects. First working together on Anno (a re-write of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons) at the Oval Space in London, I started to mix her 5-piece band doing the festival circuit and a small American tour throughout 2017. In April 2018 we collaborated with the Southbank Sinfonia to bring her album Varmints to the Queen Elizabeth Hall with full band and orchestra. This setup has since been repeated across the UK and Europe. Other works that we have collaborated on include Axeman, Tribute to 4am and Brisk Widow, her piece for two drum kits and quad electronics.
